Josephine Sumner Contemporary Handmade Rugs

For many years, I have worked as an established professional illustrator and designer, working for publishers, design agencies and advertising companies both nationally and internationally.

Six years ago I moved to a small market town in Wiltshire, not far from the World Heritage Sites of Avebury and Silbury Hill. Following a life-long interest in archaeology, I took part in several excavations near the famous Avebury Stone Circle and gained a fascinating insight into how people once inhabited and celebrated the unique landscape of Wessex.

Inspired by this and surrounded by such wonderful scenery, it did not take much persuasion before I began translating the stone circles and avenues, chalk tracks and burial mounds dotted around, into zingy colours and strong visual shapes. The result was this rug collection and, apart from being visual statements, they have the added benefit of warming one's toes on a winter's eve.
